On Friday and Saturday of Freshers’ Week, enthusiastic novices turned up to the boathouse, to learn the fundamentals of rowing, both on the machines and on the water. There was a very strong presence from both the JCR and MCR, which will hopefully lead to many boats competing in the regattas this year. The boathouse was full of the sound of ergs, with some impressive scores being laid down by some new members. The novices were also put into boats, to learn the broad strokes of being on the water. Although this is a slightly scary experience for some, the boat club hopes that soon, it will be second nature to Jesus’ next generation of rowers. The barbecue on Saturday also drew a crowd, with food awarded to survivors of outings. All of the food went, which is hopefully an indication of the quality of this year’s intake!
All in all, a successful couple of days were had by all, and we wish the best of luck to the novices, who will be busily working on their technique over the coming weeks, in anticipation of the novice regatta at the end of the year, Christ Church regatta.
